What is the effect of natural gas leaking into the soil and mixing with the ground water? Does the resultant mix affect the plant life?

AFAIK no effect at all as Natural Gas (Methane) is not soluable in water. Therefore, it should naturally leak out to the atmosphere without causing any pollution. Of course there are other additives such as that to make it smell - methane does not smell, and no doubt other impurities.
