My husband and I have just been to Edinburgh payed for by our 2 sons for our 60th birthdays. It was great, we had a lovely time. One of my daughters in law also got a photo from my Mum of myself and brother as babies with our parents and framed it. That was a lovely present I thought.
Depends on what you can afford to spend but a week-end break away would be a nice surprise.
Alternatively a "surprise meal" in a nice restaurant to which you have invited some of her best friends.
What are her hobbies? Does she enjoy reading? If so a collection of some of the latest best novels, or some subscriptions to some of her favourite magazines. Or a year's subscription to the National Trust if she likes visiting Stately Homes & Gardens. Or a lifetime membership of Saga (which will give her free Saga magazines for a life).
A trip on the Orient Express, perhaps to Bath or Folkestone, if they still go to those places, she will feel like the Queen waving out of the windows as people look up into the train.
You already have some great answers cazzbazz25. It will be my Father's 65th birthday soon, and I have had some fab ideas from ABers. The one I really liked was from Scotman84, who bought his parents an original commemorative newspaper on the occassion of their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Having Googled, I got just what I wanted, and really can't wait to see the look on his face next week !
If she has a garden .... a really nice mature tree like a logan berry or beautiful coloured Acer ...great in the Autumn or a magnolia... You can buy mature trees from specialist growers. Its an earthy organic kind of present that won't need much care once its planted. Just a thought.
A day at the races or trip to holiday spot of her childhood....although that last could well be a mega disappointment if its in Britain unless she's an amusement arcade candy floss kinda gal.
