Toilet seat question for plumbers/knowing DIYers.

My toilet seat is firmly fixed, but it does have a habit of sliding to the back of the toilet. Basically, if it was in the right place, when you sit on it, it slides back and you end up (use imagination here) so it misses the water and slides down the pan, meaning that gets dirty for nor reason. It's only a few years old, put in by a plumber, and though I can access the part holding it down, there does not appear any visible screws or bolts, just a couple of square plastic tabs SEEMINGLY covering said screws or bolts. Is it save to remove these (and how - slide along, prise up...) or are these the actual connections to the toilet?

Its hard to comment on the exact way your seat is fixed to the bowl without seeing it, but every seat I have ever fitted had some means of adjusting its exact final position, because not all toilet bowels are exactly the same shape so some allowance has to be made for that. I would assume that the adjustment mechanism on your seat has worked a bit loose with time and needs tightening up, which should be a simple enough matter, if you can get to it. I think the plastic tabs you mention will be covering the heads of the fixing bolts to make them look smarter, and I would suggest that they would push fit, so first I would try prising them off gently with a fine bladed screwdriver.

Most I have seen have large plastic wing nuts on the underside; it's likely these just need tightening. The square plastic things could well be these. Will they rotate?

Catso, you are right - I never even thought of looking below but acting on your reply I did. They are not exacly wing nuts, but they can be tightened. Ta muchly
