what is a grintern ?

We know it's something to do with onions, but how would we use it and what does it look like?

A grintern, from grint = grind, is a compartment in a granary, particularly in Dorset dialect. Thomas Hardy uses it, for example.
I've no idea what it might have to do with onions, however!
