Smell of gas at new home??
7 Answers
Moved into new rented home just over a week ago it has gas central heating which I have not had for a while the last house had oil.
In the hallway which is next the the door the to the garage where the boiler is and where I can see gas pipes etc there is a smell.
It smells like gas to me it is quite a strong smell and it bothers me. My boyfriend does not seem too bothered but I think I have t better sense of smell than him. The smell tends to come and ago through out the day and night and I have even got an air fresher to try and cover the unusal smell.
I have bought a carbon monoxide sensor which is not showing any cardon monoxide levels present but I know that this wont show a gas leak.
Should I call British Gas to come round, I will feel an idiot if its a wasted journey. Is it usual to smell a little gas in a property??? Does it cost to call out British Gas to check the boiler and pipes etc????
I have found paper work at the property which says that the house was built in 1995 but since there has been problems with the boiler that british gas stated was unsafe and had to be switched off till it was fixed - tis work was undertaken but it does show the system is aged!!! A gas certificate was done in june this year the letting agent has stated.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.no it doesn't cost to call british gas out for a leak or suspected leak, ie. smell of gas. i would most definitely call them right now, as your senses could be getting used to smelling the gas and thats why you think its not there all the time. be safe rather than sorry, espically as it doesnt cost you. look up the number right now. and as for the landlords certificate of safety, id ask to see the certificate for yourself and dont be fobbed off by the agents. its your lives at risk here if anything was wrong.
WHAT THE LETTING AGENCY STATES AND WHAT IS TRUE COULD BE VERY DIFFERENT THINGS !!!
There should be a copy of the certificate at their office. Insist on seeing it for yourselves, they have to be kept on record for 5 years. If they refuse they are breaking the law. There should have been a new certificate issued to you and the letting agent aswell, when you moved in.

Don't worry about a possible wasted journey for the engineer - I've called them twice for a gas leak (once in a villa at Center Parcs!) and both times I was right, there was a leak. Better to be safe than sorry. One engineer told me they're called out for all kinds of false alarms - rotting onions seems to be a favourite cause as they give off quite a gassy smell! My point being, they've seen it all before, and imagine the consequences if you ignore your instincts.
Good luck.
