Curtain Pole getting stuck

I recently bought and fitted a heavy duty curtain pole to go with some rather heavy silk curtains. Both the pole and the curtain rings are made of painted pine.

The trouble is that when I either open or close the curtains the curtain rings do not move very easily, and if I move the individual rings the curtain hooks very often become detached from them.

Should I use candle wax or something similar to make the rings move along the pole more easily ?

furniture polish will fix it immediately - also works superbly on drawer runners!
mcn do you have something there like Johnson's Paste Wax - the people who took care of our house/hardwood floors when I was a child used it and it was very slick.
The best thing to use is Sylicone Spray it is a dry lubricant and won't clogwith dust like wax. try this link.

Excellent answers, thank you - polish/wax and lubricant worked well on separate poles.
