I have painted my side of my neighbours fence and he put a scribbled letter through my door saying 'Don't paint my fence again. I want to see you'. Was I wrong to paint my side without asking his permission first. I thought what I did on my side was my business.

If it's his fence and on his land then strictly speaking you have no right to paint it. Seriously though, I can't see why he's bothered - it's not like he has to look at it, is it?

Only if the paint has dribbled/run through to his side. Otherwise tell him to p*** off.
as you said, its his fence so really you cant do a thing to your side of it as you dont own it. You cant fix anything to it or paint it without his permission.
Painting your side of the fence is what many people do without problems but your neighbour can stop you as its his property
Did he consult you on the colour of the fence before he put it up?
I'm with McNoodle.
If it's his fence you can't paint it without permission. He doesn't need to agree colours with you or anything else. It's his, not yours.

That said, I'm sure if you explain that you didn't realise this and agree not to do it again there's no need for him to make an issue of it.
Yes, you were wrong!
I can't believe you even have to ask or is this a joke?
...all this comes down to common sense. No, strictly speaking, in the eyes of the law you can't do anything to his fence as it is his.
But, as it's on the side he can't see, therefore making no difference to him whatsoever, unless as McNoodle says it's dripped onto his side, he'd have to be pretty 'it's my ball' petty to make anything of it. As for "I want to see you", don't go round, make sure he comes to you - you're not a child.

Then tell him to p*** off...
Why explode it,just be diplomatic and apologise and say your sorry.
And then in the future when he wants to come on too your property, then tell him to p**s o*f.
we have something similar going on. our neighbours have put up a new fence. it looks very nice but they have painted it bright green - both sides. the rest of our wooden stuff, fence, shed, bench are all brown. I realise they can paint it whatever colour they want but where do I draw the line? dayglow orange!! (they removed a panel and painted our side while we were on holiday)
My neighbours have painted "their" side of my fence so that my side now has messy green dribbles all over it. Not only that, but they must have used some sort of spray gun as the fall-out green mist has splattered one side of my greenhouse too. Frankly, they've got a b****** nerve, but in the interests of neighbourly relations I've said nothing - and I'm not usually one to sit back and say nothing!
I think you should push the fence right over when your neighbours aren't in and blame it on a freak gust of wind. He'll have to put it back up (after all it is his) and you can watch him while having a glass of red wine and some nuts! hee hee
rather than go to war over it, why not just invite him over for a cup of coffee and a polite apology? Life isn't much fun when you hate your neighbours.
