Toilet cistern roaring...

Can any plumbers out there please tell me why the toilet cistern roars deafeningly during the refill, which takes anything up to twenty minutes, with a slow, slow drip from the tank refill tap ? This comes and goes on a cyclic basis, really bad on every flush for a few days, then it appears to stop for about a week, then back again worse than ever. The pipes around the house vibrate at the time, and turning on any cold tap full during the refill stops the problem - until you turn the tap off again.. ! Plumbers don't seem to want to know..!!

its probably an airlock in the feed pipe. if you drain that pipe and refill it it should work, or flush the loo then clout the pipe with a hammer all along its length to release the air.

Clout a water pipe with a hammer...? Ok.. I'll try it..gently..!! :o) Damn pipe disappears into the wall high up, so it'll have to be done inside the airing cupboard somehow... Think I'll probably end up draining the whole system and re-filling it, for the best chance of success..!! Thanks for your help...

Try fitting a Torbeck valve at the cistern inlet. Price around �7 for side entry and �10 for bottom entry. These appear to cut out pipe banging and shut off without drips!!
