how do I find workmen who are actually interested in working? They either arrange to come to view the job and don't turn up, say they have too much work on or turn up and promise to price it up and you never hear from them again. What am I doing wrong?

Now with the ones who turn up and price the job and never get back to you maybe think the job wont be worth doing because there is not a big profit in it or dont really have the time to do it.
Now think yourself lucky that you havent given these guys a job because the ones you never hear from again mybe rogue. When ever getting prices for work ask them to bring pictures of work they have completed on other jobs (most good builders do have a photo album of work to win jobs). If that they dont ask to view work that they have done and then you get the chance to get any good/bad feedback from people who have employed them to carry out work for them. I hope this all makes sense. LOL. Good luck and remember no matter how big or small the job Its your money and you should be happy with the end result no matter what.
You could try a ploy I have often successfully used. Offer cash (real money) for a job well done and completed on time. Don't forget to ask for a receipt. I have found that I build up a collection of good tradesmen who will turn up for me in an emergency because I pay on time. If I have any doubts with a job in progress I remind them that I have contacts across the county and I always recommend a tradesman who works well. Well it works for me. Could be that you live in a large urban area where there are many tradesmen with too many potential customers?
