small holes

I Have small holes, too small for an animal, and no ants or anything coming out. THey seem to be fairly deep also, for example you can drop a stick down them and they just fall. Any ideas what can be causing this? My lawn doesn't have a lot of grass due to too much shade.

Yeah in the back yard. I don't have a lot of grass there due to too much shade. Its been pretty dry here lately, but we did have a lot of rain earlier this summer.

sounds like mining bees...they make holes in turf in shady areas.
