Does a gas hob legally need an ignition in a private rented propery?

I have just rented a property and the gas ignition doesn't work. Ive told the landlady and she said to use one of those clicker things you can buy. I do not think it is safe to use anything to ignite gas, especially with a young child about. Does she have to provide a gas hob that works fully, including the ignition. Surely she cant expect me to use other means when it should have an ignition. The hob shows that it should start clicking when the knob is pressed down, then the gas is released when the knob is turned. There are no instructions left, and i havent yet seen the safety certificate.

I am not an expert so someone may give you better advise.

Firstly she must have a gas safety certificate otherwise she is breaking the law so I would strongly advise you ask to see one. Some ovens dont have an ignition spark built in which is why you can by those clicker things. If all is working ok then it is perfectly safe to use one just dont have the gas on for more than a few seconds before lighting.

if the appliance has an ignition device to light the gas then it is not working. the high tension leads that carry the power tothe underside of the burner ring are shorting out and not creating a spark where it is needed.
they are not expensive to buy, �14 (stoves) �12 (canon) is what ive paid to replace the 4 main leads under the spillage tray
the clicker system is not unsafe but it is not very convienient
ps the isolation switch for an electric cooker must be within 2 metres of the appliance

My gas cooker has an electric ignition, the cooker (even though it is gas) has to be plugged in and switched on for it to work. If for any reason we have a power cut (quite regularly round here!) then I have to ignite the gas with a match.

mine has a battery in a compartment under the oven - see if there's one and see if it needs replacing. BTW - you should be perfectly safe using a clicker or match. Also, the hazard of a child turning on the gas is not negated by a working ignition, they can still turn it on and not press the button!
