And don't forget to pull the chain........when you come back in bring a bucket of coal.
Bet you can't still make a wooden trolly with four pram wheels.
We had a bath in the kitchen!!
Yes, I remember Mum & Dad having to search for a shilling for the electric & gas meters too. I also remember stretching on the stairs to try to put the money in, but was too little & had to use a chair!

They used to have an outside toilet in Islington (or use a bucket in the night), but shortly after I was born, they moved to Essex & had an inside toilet & bathroom , bliss for them & us kids! There was a large copper in the kitchen that you had to light, then pump the hot water upstairs for a bath - oh, God did it makes yer arms ache!

Dad was one of the first in the street to own a car & remember him cranking that up with the help of my brothers!. Also one of the first to buy a telly & the boys across the road later admitted to peeping through the window to watch it, bless.
waking up to leafy shaped patterns on the bedroom windows after "Jack Frost" had been, pre-central heating!
what about the old twin tub washing machines?
Also no one owned a tv, only rented , well, not where i came from anyway. we used to have to get up and change channels too! How did we cope????
Oh, clever trev - I remember sitting tearing newspaper into squares, then Mum making holes in the corners & threading string through. It used to look really pretty hanging from the cistern!

My friend said her Mum was posher & used to collect orange wrappers from the local market & threadle them! Ha, ha!
We had old army coats on the bed to keep us warm at night, no sheets for us. Bread and jam for dinner, and a pork chop with spuds for the old man, how he could sit and eat it when we watched him i don't know, but he was the bread winner.
We had a black and white TV when I was really, really young and it didn't have a remote control or anything. You had to wind the knob to get it to change chanel.
lol Julie - wherever did we get the energy from to change channels! The mere thought of it!
ditto Funny Girl!
The times you had to pull that bl**dy chain before it worked !
Trev - those old utility blankets & army coats were so itchy if they touched your face! Then reluctantly climbing out of bed in the morning & tiptoeing on freezing cold lino to get to the lav!
The Dandy, Beano, Hotspur, and Twix Twin model railroads...............and "Don't be burning yourself on the hot water bottle."

We had a big record player unit with doors and the speaker stripes down the sides. Rather like a sideboard.
