About ten years ago I was staying with friends who were living and working in the Serengeti region of Tanzania. No mains anything - no water, electricity gas, telephone; "long-drop" latrine.
But they had got an Electrolux fridge-freezer - the same as the one I had at home. The difference was that while mine was electric, theirs had a shallow paraffin heater under the bottom compartment. It had to be cleaned out every week - wick trimmed, etc -- but it did produce ice.
There's nothing better than being in the middle of nowhere, watching an East African sunset with a gin and tonic with ice.
