Reduced Council Tax? Bus Stop Outside
8 Answers
Can anyone please tell me if we should pay a reduced council tax amount because we have a bus stop right outside our house? We have heard from a few people that this is so but just want to check it out on here before I ring the Council.
Thanks in advance. Joey

Assuming that you're in England, your council tax band is based upon the value of your house as if it had been sold on 1 April 1991.
It's possible that a council tax payer, somewhere in England has spotted that the nominal values of houses in their street are only just above the cut-off for a particular band. They've then successfully appealed against the valuation for their particular house, on the basis that the presence of a bus stop outside slightly reduces the value (and thus takes it into a lower band). If a 'one-off' appeals like this get publicity, it can quickly develop into an urban myth that everyone with a bus stop outside their house can get a reduction in their council tax. (It's simply not true).

Years ago, when it was the rates system you could get discounts for various 'inconveniences'. My parents got one in the 1970's when the club across the road from their house expanded into their car park, with the result that there were a lot of people parking outside my parents house! Now it is the council tax it is the same rate across the board, no discounts.
