theft of a motorbike
my dad had an expensive motorbike stolen many years ago, 1988 in fact. never saw it again and it was never found. it absolutely devastated my dad at the time. anyway my dad is no longer with us but i was looking through some old photo's last week and came across a picture of his bike. now with the internet you can find out most things, so via the dvla i put in the registration number of the bike and it came up that it was last taxed in 1994. how could this be when it had been stolen 5 years previous? i didnt think you could tax a stolen vehicle that was still on the same reg plates. any info would be of interest to me
thankyou

If this bike was recovered after the payout it is the insurance company's property. Your dad will have had to submit the logbook and everything else to them to get his money.
So, the bike has subsequently been found and the insurance company has sold it.
All perfectly standard and normal procedure

not that this helps your answer but i had a motorbike stolen about 10 years ago - a few days later the police rang me to say a park keeper had found a bike with no number plates - could i go along and see if it was mine and let them know. I did go along, it was mine and i got it picked up. the very next day i was admitted to hospital, and stayed in for a month and diagnosed with a serious illness, so i never got round to telling the police i'd found it, never claimed on the insurance, never rode it again as i was too unwell
fast forward 8 years, and the bike has been languishing in the garage for all that time and my b-I-L wants a bike, so i give him this one I rang dvla to see if it was still listed as stolen but it wasn't!

Same thing happened to me had a car stolen insurance paid out turned up 8 months later. Had been used by a drug dealer had false plates on it. Had to go to Police Station to identifiy it . It had clocked up 13000 miles in that time he had been busy. Last saw it 3 years later sat behind it at traffic lights wondered if the lady driving it knew its history.
