Creative Rats!

We have rats in a shallow foulwater manhole outside our house. They appear to bring small stones into the manhole leaving some on the benching and some in the trap which is on the outlet side.

When the trap becomes too full of stones it blocks up and I have to spend a pleasant hour or so removing the stones! Last time I left it too long and had to remove a bag full of stones.

Does anyone know why they are doing this and where they get the stones from? I can't believe that the rats are creating sculptures!

All the pipes leading into the manhole seem to be intact, with a good flow. I have recently put down poison in the manhole, which has been eaten, but the stones keep appearing.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

If the stones are about 10mm or less, then this could be pea gravel, pea gravel is used around the outside of the under ground drain, looks like your furry friends are removing it from somewhere around your property, I think you need to get this looked at by a professional.
