cleaning marble plaque fronted granite headstone

My son 's headstone is a small sloped front type is has become very dirty the lettering is engraved and paint is now gone , marble feels rough and is grey what can I do

Hi, all i tend to use on my childrens headstone is warm soapy water. When its was really bad i used a scrubbing brush to clean it, but avoided the lettering.

You don't say how long the headstone has been in place.

I remember my lettering start to fade many years after the headstone had been erected possibly as many as 10 years. I telephoned the stonemasons who made the headstone and they said they would go out and re do the lettering. Which they did at no cost to myself.

thanks for your quick answer it's 20 yrs now but but having moved away from the area it hasn't been cleaned for 9yrs
