depends on the thickness of the mattress but if its got a layer of foam which is a different colour than the other layer its usually the thinner foam that's memory type and should be on the top
if its equal thickness you maybe able to tell by the density memory is a lot denser than the other type of cheaper foam that usually makes up most of the mattress it springs back quicker if you push your fist in it
sorry the cheaper foam springs back quicker
didn't quite make that clear
You can use ours either way, and it never needs turning.
If one side looks like an upside down egg-carton, then that side is the top side that you should lie on, as the spaces between allow air to circulate. You didn't say what type you have, but some are like that and some are plain, but there should have been a diagram within the packaging to show you which side is to be used as the top side.
I have just bought one [ten inches thick] and had the same question,
the seller didn't know,
but after trying both sides overnight I came to the conclusion that the label is the answer, so have the label uppermost.

i think your wrong there, the egg carton type side should be at the bottom, memory foam is very smooth
its been used in hospitals for years before it was in the shops
i used to work in the nhs, had experience with these
