Fixing a fireplace

About 20 years ago, my fireplace was taken out and replaced by a rather nasty wood / chipboard thing. I'd like to actually do something about this - put in a proper fireplace and get the thing working to the point where I could once again have a nice (smokeless) fire going.

So, any advice would be welcome! Primarily - is this something that I could do myself or do I need a qualified tradesman to do it? What's the score with getting the chimney / flue recommissioned? And what would be the approximate cost?

Many thanks,
