lawn gunge

I know it has been a wet summer but when i step onto my frong garden i get this gunge - slimey stuff- eminating from the ground. It's horrible looking stuff. I've tried aerating the lawn but this has had no effect. Anyone any ideas as to what is causing this?

Could be BP that you've got a cess-pit under your lawn, get in touch with the council.

No, don't have a cesspit, got regular sewer pipes. Might be that the pipe is fractured..i'll have to check that out.
