How do i remove a modern metal plasterboard rawlplug, preferably without hacking out a larger hold in the wall than the plug.

If it's proving really troublesome can you not drive it further in and plaster/polyfill over it?

Turn a screw round the wrong way with the head over the plug, and give the pointy end a whack with a hammer. This should know it in far enough to fill over as JSB suggests

Or you could just carefully use an electric drill.  Just put the drill bit as far into the plug and hit the power button, and hey-presto!
If it's the type I'm thinking of, just unscrew it, using a star screwdriver.
