Craft Foods Takeover

Should we the British boycott all Craft foods because of their dishonesty towards Cadbury`s workers? They said they would not sack them and now they have. I certainly will not buy their products in future.

"On 3 October, 2007, Cadbury announced plans to close the Somerdale plant by 2010 with the loss of some 500 jobs. In an effort to maintain competitiveness in a global marketplace, production will be moved to a sister factory in Skarbimierz, Poland. Another motivational factor was the high real estate value of the land. In the longer term it is likely the largely greenfield site will be re-classified and provide Keynsham with much needed additional housing. Labour MP for Wansdyke, Dan Norris said "news of the factory's closure is a hard and heavy blow, not just to the workforce, but to the Keynsham community as a whole".

One local resident started a campaign to urge English Heritage to protect the site, and preserve the history of the factory. Since when is this new news? It's just Unions and Mandelson jumping in on a bandwagon. This plan already existed.

It is news because apparently Kraft said they would not close the Keynsham plant as Cadbury had planned, if they took over; and they seem to have reneged on that.
Fewer and fewer UK owned businesses here these days. We seem to be heading downhill at a rate of knots. That's globalisation for you though. Opportunities for the merchants, whilst the workers see jobs going elsewhere where labour is desperate & cheap.

I live in Bristol, not far from the sommerdale factory, it was obvious to me it was going to be shut down (i bumped in to an old workmate and he said the same thing), I along with the old workmate and 200 others were made redundant back at the end of 2006/7 and we use to produce the packaging for cadburys/ mars,KP, and birds eye walls, printing things such as, magnum, solero, mars bar, fudge, twix and hundreds of others.
all the business (amcor flexibles) from our factory (colodense) was moved to poland,portugal and russia, so to me it was obvious once the takeover was done production would be moved to one of these countries.
oh and a average house in keynsham costs about 250k, the factory will be bulldozed and lots of nice money making houses will be built.

It staggers me that people don't understand how these sort of negotiations work.
Kraft will have been asked the question constantly - 'Are you going to shut the factory'. The answer will have been along the lines of 'We have no current plans to close the factory'. One just keeps repeating it. Been there, done it, got the T-shirt. Now the plan has changed and they do have a new plan.
But it's somewhat disengenuous of Mandy to see that was not what he was expecting - he would have known exactly what was going on.

I will be honest and thought an anouncement would be made in about 6 months not this soon, but i expected it none the less.

I haven't been following this news item, but reading the thread two things spring to mind.
1. How will boycotting all Kraft products help the existing workers? Surely all that will happen is Kraft's business will fall and therefore they will be forced to make further cuts. Think about the miners going on strike to save the pits - where are they now?
2. If we start to boycott all products that were once UK made but are now made elsewhere in the world we will have very miserable lives.

I regard it as a thoughtful gesture but one which is not practicable to put into action.
On Webbo's points, I agree that the company has lost a lot of credibility because of the speed with which it has made this announcement, following the deal clinching. Irrespective of whether it knew what it was going to do, tactically it is hard to see why it wouldn't have waited another month.
