Gas fired AGA...HELP!
7 Answers
My boyfriend and I are moving into a house with a gas fired AGA. I know nothing about them, this one has two large doors one above the other and a little door on the left. It has two "hobs" with lids. I have tried to find out more on-line but I haven't had much luck, especially not about gas fired AGAs. Are they cheap to run? Are they easy to use? It doesn't power the hot water or central heating. I am tempted to sell the AGA and put in a good modern range oven, as there is no other cooker. I really don't know anything about them, I've never used one, but as we don't have a lot of money, the running costs are a concern. Can anyone offer any information or advice please? Thank you.

I'm kind of surprised there is no other cooker because lovely as they are in winter, spreading a real warm glow through the kitchen, they are pretty impracticle in the summer and most people have a seperate system for summer.
Yes they do tend to be expensive to run and they are great for certain types of cooking but if you don't cook an awful lot I reckon you'll find it pretty expensive to run.
The good news is that there is a good market in selling second hand Agas and if you have a look on the net I'm sure you'll find someone who'll come and remove it and give you a good price

according to gassafe if your range does not produce hot water then your normal qualification (ckr1) as opposed to (ckhb) is sufficient to allow a gas service person to look at your aga and maintain it.
the reality is they are a specialised piece of kit and not every engineer knows his/her way around them, thus adding to your problems. sorry to add to your worries but with the cost of agas you really have to look after them
