Of course ..
Try to prune out crossing-over branches to keep tree open.
Prune out damage.

If you are considering pruning to keep it small you have bought the wrong variety or the wrong tree

That has given me some hope for my Magnolia 'Stellata' which I planted only months ago which was badly damaged by our falling gazebo. Hopefully it will recover?
