Im looking to buy a new mattress (double bed) but Im totally confused by all the different ones available. Memory foam, full foam, pocket sprung, doesnt mean much to me!
Im aware of well known brands such as Silent Night, but are they any good?
I havent got serious back problems, but need a comfy bed!
Im looking to spend maybe £300/£400. Any advice appreciated, TIA

Go to your nearest bed shop and test them out.
Lie flat on your back. You should be able to feel a gap at the small of your back. If you can't the mattress is too soft.
Your hips should not be pushed up, if they are the mattress is too hard.
Sit on the edge. Don't buy a mattress that collapses at the sides when you sit on it.
Some memory foam is very good. Cheap memory foam in your price bracket will be very bad, you will spend the night sweating and overheated. Avoid any kind of memory foam if you suffer from restless leg syndrome.
Do not buy any mattress until you have lay on it.

If you get hot in bed, I'd definitely avoid any kind of memory foam/full foam as they retain the heat and in hot weather you end up feeling that you're sleeping in an oven.
The best mattresses are usually pocket sprung, and the more spring pockets they have, the better and firmer the mattress will usually be. Some people like a nice thick layer over their springs. Others with back problems sometimes like a nice firm mattress without too much padding. I think one of the best place to look for quality beds, if you have one near you, is John Lewis who normally stock a wide variety of quality mattresses, including their Own Label ones. . Be prepared to lose your self consciousness and lie on a mattress for a while, tossing and turning without any outer clothes/jackets on to feel whether it's firm enough and has enough padding on for you to be able to lie on it comfortably.

I agree with Whoever. We spent a fortune on a memory foam mattress. I have never suffered so much from cramp and pins and needles as I have since I started using it. It is so difficult to move in that you really have to make an effort to launch yourself into a new position. I have to get out of bed, assess where I want my bottom to be then aim for that. Also, it does make you hot and I have woken up baking on occasions. Unfortunaltely at the price we paid it's not something that we can exchange for many years.
