I'm sure this has come up before but don't remember the answer. I have foolishly burnt a saucepan (not non-stick) - forgot to turn flame down - now bottom of pan is black. Have soaked and scrubbed (wot an interesting life I lead) - slight improvement only. Any magic tricks please?

Try wirewool and a scouring agent.
Yep.

Open bin lid, chuck pan in, shut bin lid. Buy a new pan tomorrow, life's too short!
lots of biological washing powder/liquid and some water bring to boil leave overnight repeat if necessary gets burnt on stuff off all pans
i put washing up liquid and hot water into a pan and then put it on to boil on the stove. You will then find all the crap will rise up to the top, let it cool and then wash as normal
I think He/She is talking about the BOTTOM of the Pan.!!
// now bottom of pan is black //

The inside or outside?
try oven cleaner, the inside of an oven is similar to the outside of you pan.
Careful how you use oven cleaner on pots and pans. I did and ruined my very nice pot.
Seriously? What's wrong with you all...bin the ruddy thing....lol
Pour in some lemon juice, leave it for a while then scrub with wire wool. I think if you boil beetroot in metal pans it makes them all shiny again too.

Thank you for all your speedy answers. Shall have a bash. Vagrant - the inside is burnt. Boo - normally I'd follow your advice - it's just that the pan has sentimental value, as my lovely late mum made tons of delicious goodies in it (big softy, me) so I want to try and rescue it. Thanks, all.
Ahhhh fair 'nuff lucca, sorry for my bluntness then, hope i didn't offend. And I hope it can be saved!

Quite all right, BOO - I do like your bluntness; you often make me laugh. I may be doing a little swearing when I tackle the wire wool!
What is the pan made of?
before you start wire wooling try heating up water with dishwasher powder in it or some biological washing powder, don't boil. mind the fumes leave it to cool and wash then rinse well.
If the pan is not non-stick, get one of those metal pan-scourers and give it a scrub with that.
Metal on metal usually does the trick.
(Wire wool would work too as that is metal but it can get a bit finnicky.)
What's the pan made of?
If it's Aluminium, dishwasher powder will wreck it.
washing powder just boil it up let it cool and it will lift it off, just keep repeating till its clean

Sorry - have been away from screen for a bit. Pan is enamel - should have mentioned that before. Thanks for all replies.
