I wonder if someone can give me some advice about roses. I have just had some bare root roses delivered and as there is about 25cm of snow outside which is making it impossible to dig in the garden, what do I do with them? I have no greenhouse or garage etc in which to put them.

Could you put them in pots outside to start with? Then put them in the flower bed when its a bit warmer

Better to keep them in a darkend place that's cold... they'll contnue to remain dormant until good planting weather... Don't water them!

Thank you all of you. I will put them somewhere cold until I am able to get them in pots before putting them in the garden. The advice you all gave me was really appreciated.

Put them in a bucket of water and keep them cool and dark.

do not put them in a bucket of water - they will rot. Wrap in newspaper with some moist compost inside to prevent the roots from drying out and keep in a cold, dark place.

I was caught out last year with the delivery of a large collection of perennials and some bare root roses - which arrived 2 days before Xmas. Great. And I had to queue at the post office for the darn things as well.
I did manage to keep them going with a few smaller plants lost. But this year I decided to avoid the worry and simply wont order any plants til spring. The perennials offer was repeated in the spring, was cheaper and of course, the ideal time of year to plant for success.

Stand the bare roots in a bucket of water for a few hours, then wrap each rose in damp newspaper & plant in a bag of fresh compost until the weather is milder.
Keep in a cool but frostfree shed but do not water until you are ready to plant out, the moisture already in the compost should be quite sufficient.
