the properties themselves are not owned by estate agents, they are owned by private landlords.. :)

If you want direct from landlords, your best bet is local newspapers

The local paper here has pages of adverts for private rents. Or we have something called the Accommodation Shop in the town, you might have something like that. Lots of estate agents handle rents too - they don't own the houses, just manage the rentals.

You could try Gumtree. Easyroom mate is another one but more for just a room in a shared place.

Or findaproperty is another one that estate agents use. You don't pay the estate agent though, the landlord does. Try shop windows or Gumtree otherwise.
