Who has one of these? Do you recommend them? What's the basic difference between the older version and new 3G one? Are any other book readers worth considering? Do you have to have a Kindle to download from Amazon, or can use download to any book reader?

Nope, it is a plug (to electrical socket) one end and fits in the kindle the other end. I can tell the difference between a USB connector and any other... I built my own PC so I had damned well better know! lol :)

I love my kindle . I have the non 3g one. I would advocate getting a cover though because then you feel like you are holding a book, Ive got the cover with the built in light which is great for reading in bed and if you fall asleep reading it switches itsself to standby and it saves your page. Love it!
I have a kindle 3G which is great for travelling, I can download guides or access Wikipedia/google,. I still read "real books", especially foreign literature.
I find the accessability of different fonts and font sizes a great advantage. When my eyes are tired or strained, I can use the large print.
Having said I would never consider using a Kindle, after trying out my daughter's, I wouldn't be without
