Bought 4 years ago (warranty expired last year) is it worth sending for repair knowing the TV is just one circuit board and engineers tend to just replace boards rather than fixing them? Sound but no picture!

Personally I'd say no, as ecomically it'd probably be cheaper to replace, but no harm in seeing if it could be reasonably fixed
Ask for a replacement, tell the suppliers you`ve been in touch with Trading Standards and under the sales of goods act any item is supposed to last up to 6 years
It has lasted up to 6 years.
You won't get a replacement like that. Firstly the perceived quality of the item is taken into account, so an expensive TV might reasonably be expected to last 6 years, a cheap one not so much, they also take into account the use you have had out of the item so there would only ever be a offer amounting to 1/3 or less of the price of the tv, it's not reasonable to expect a manufacturer to give anyone 4 years use of a TV.
It could be as simple as the connector pluggything (sorry to use confusing technical terms but I don't know the common name for it :-) from the screen to the circuit board that's lose.

If you're gonna chuck it anyway, have a go at opening it up and have a peek.

If it's a premium brand, take to a repairer for a quote.
If it's a budget brand .. buy a premium brand.
you can only realistacally use the 6 year rule if you can prove that the model you have has an inherent fault, hard to prove and also highly unlikely
you say there is sound but no picture, one of the obvious and probably first things that a repairer will look for is to see if the LCD backlight has gone, same as happens on many PC and laptop screens.
If so these are relatively cheap to replace
If you can find an Independent TV repair shop who would be willing to look at your TV and give you a free estimate as to the cost of repair then would go down this route first. If you have a quality TV then it might be worth repairing.
..and, if you need a new one, make sure you get a free, five-year warranty included (for example, from John Lewis).
