is there a pattern to the way postcodes are distributed?- i dont mean the meanings of the full postcode but rather the first 3 combo of letter and number.
there seems to be a well formed sequence 1,2,3,4 and then everything goes haywire 14 and criss crossed 5 then another sequence appears15,16,17, or elsewhere 34 is next to 92 and this seems to be the general pattern of organoised/disorganised sequences.
also is there a website with uk postcode map?

The answer is something along the lines that local post offices numbered their own districts which lead to the sporadic referencing.  There is a very detailed history & reference here: http://www.answers.com/topic/postcode-1

i think once upon a time the numbers were all in a nice order geographically but now cities and towns have expanded they can't keep things so nice as they have to add more and more numbers. As density of housing is increasing too they can't just continue the number sequence further out of the town centre but instead have to make the areas corresponding to each number smaller which just messes everything up!

i was looking at a 1966 postcode map-and that is what prompted this thread, that even nearly 40 years ago it was so chaotic
