Postcodes

How do postcodes work? I live in London, N22 and the surrounding places are N13, N10, N17 and N11 � I don't understand this, wouldn't you assume that all the numbers would be close? N1 is Angel/Islington and N2 is East Finchley � not exactly next door to each other�

Can anyone tell me how postcodes work and is it like this across the Country?

Although it is not always apparent but in London they are roughly in alphabetical order. I don't know when they were originally assigned but they correspond to older postal districts, some of the names of which have lost their importance.

AS Rumford says, they're alphatical (apart from x1, that's always the most central).

For example, SW2 Brixton, SW3 Chelsea. SW4 Clapham, SW5 Earl's Court, SW6 Fulham etc etc r

Just thought: in SW's case they go back to the beginning afte SW10 - hence SW11 Battersea, SW!2 Balham etc. I don't think they do this in all postal districts.

Totally irrelevant I know, but I was brought up in N22 and my bruvver still lives there.

Good question, I hadn't ever thought about it before.
