Contraceptive Pill for thrush sufferer
5 Answers
Hi everyone,
I've been driving myself mad this morning, doing some internet research on different contraceptive pills. I know that the side-effects and benefits are different for each user, however I was hoping to find something that would be beneficial overall.
I suffer from thrush and cystitis quite regularly and after ruling out the (many!) causes, I have been left with one, the pill. Although not confirmed, many women experience thrush as a side effect of using a combination oral contraceptive, so instantly I started looking at the mini-pill as a suitable alternative. However, the widely experienced side-effects of the mini pill really turned me off. I can often have a low libido, and pain during sex so I don't want to use something which could aggravate this further (I'd rather find something which would increase it!)
So, instead I looked at the combination pill which has a lower dose of oestrogen and have found the following three:
Brevinor
Ovranette
Marvelon
After conducting some quite limited internet research it would seem that Brevinor could be the most suitable for me. It has a low oestrogen level and some women also reported that it several other key benefits. There were still people who disagreed but this is to be expected.
Does anyone have a similar experience? Or used Brevinor? I'm off to the doctors tonight and will also be insisting that I have a urine test to rule out diabetes which is also common in thrush sufferers

Sophie, I've heard of the mooncup - I've not really looked in to it before but I will. Did you have a problem with tampons?
Bednobs, I've never even heard about resistant thrush but sex can be quite painful at times. I've just had a quite search on Google but cant see any information about it, do you have a link?
Thanks again xx

I wasn't aware of a specific problem with tampons but read that you shouldn't use them whilst you have thrush as they are not selective of what they absorb so anything that should be in your vagina naturally keeping it healthy is taken away. Mooncups don't do this and after you get over the yuk factor they are a much better alternative although I do still use tampons sometimes now I've changed pill as thrush isn't such a problem anyway.
I used to use Ovranette but one of the times i was prescribed it by my doctor the pharmacist said he was under instructions to refer anyone looking for Ovranette back to their doctor for a different type of pill. I asked why and he said he was not able to say, just to go back to the doctor. I tried a second pharmacist who said the same. Went back to docs who prescribed Marvelon and couldnt give me a reason for the Ovranette problem. Has remained a mystery ever since!
