BT installed new master socket. It has 3 pins (if that is the right term).
The slave has 6. Which numbers should I use on the slave (1,2 & 3 does not work!)

2&5 are the signal pair, 3 is sometimes connected as a ring wire but this isn't generally needed these days and you're better off leaving it disconnected (especially if you have broadband on the phone line)

I think you might be looking at the part of the master socket that your not meant to touch (where the main line first connects)
There should be 6 punch down terminals separate to the main incoming connection where you attach the cables for the extensions, all you need is a single pair connected from pins 2 and 5 on the extra terminals on the master socket to pins 2 and 5 on the extension.

Hi,
the old master sockets had 6 connections, 123456, the new BT master socket, called a nte5 has only two on the incoming and four on the extension side,.
Wiring is as follows.:
The incoming will go to A and B on the larger part of the faceplate.
any extensions go to terminals, 2 ( usually a white/blue wire) and 5 ( usually a blue/white wire.) if you have old phones then you need to connect a wire to terminal 3 to make the bells ring. this is usually a orange/white wire,( if you have filters plugged in then leave out the orange from terminal 3, it will only slow the internet) but you may have older wiring with different colours or you may have wiring put in by a builder and then the colours could be anything..
on any of your extension sockets use only terminals 2 and 5, the colours will be the same as the master socket extension wires.
All wires that were in terminals 146 on the master never did anything, so are all spare.
