We have had an upgrade to the new digital tv service, carried out by the local council. It's a borough wide initiative, ready for 2012 switchover. However since the upgrade was installed, first the picture breaks up, so have to assume that is the signal strength. Secondly we now can't record from from TV to the dvd player, but you can play films. The message box on TV screen says no signal. so apart from get on the council about this, is there anything i need to do. Do you have to retune the dvd player, as wouldn't have a clue how that works. I have seen others on here say the same i think?
We had a similar problem with the picture breaking up, on checking where the signal was coming from , we were receiving some from Hampshire and not the as many from our usual Oxford area. The OH , has just told me that when he looked at the list of channels he deleted all the channels ( some repeated, several BBc 1 signals) that were not from our usual source. This seems to have soted the problem.

The TV and dvd are both digital, tv has freeview, and it's only since the upgrade that now can't record from the tv onto the dvd player, whereas could before. It's a record and play type, if that makes sense.
Old recorders are analogue and will not receive the new digitial tv signals, and a new one will be needed If you have have one of the newer ones which receives the new digital signals just like your tv it will need retuning as all the channels have moved. Hope that makes sense as i am not very good at explaining techie things and the expert (OH) is out.
ubasses, nope sorry don't understand. and i'm no good at tech stuff, hence the question. Both tv and separate dvd plaver are digital and both have freeview built in. And as said before the upgrade had no problem recording programmes.

You can't record to a DVD player, only to a DVD Recorder. Please confirm that you actually have a DVD recorder and that you've successfully recorded to this before.
If that's the case then forget recording for a while, you need to get to the position where you can do this:
On the TV, select the DVD channel (i.e. the channel you normally watch DVDs on)
On the DVD, select a TV channel so that you can see the TV channel you've selected on the DVD playing back on your TV.
If you can do the above two things then recording is easy. If you can't do it, let us know where it's going wrong ...

from the dvd player handset, you press source button, brings up AV1, AV2, AV3, AV4, PC. AV4 is the channel we record from, does that make sense. But when you now go to AV4, a message box appears on the TV screen that says there is no signal. I went to record something last night, and that is what happened.
ok here goes, switch tv on, press source button on dvd player handset, on tv screen says AV4, dvd, but the tv screen is black. With both TV and DVD recorder/player on, the message box comes up (i) No Signal. Sorry i can't explain it any better than that. I did ask the contract engineer who came to make sure there was a signal to the TV, about whether the DVD player would be affected, and he said it shouldn't, wrong....
OK I assume that the council provided a set-top box for you, and connected this set-top box to your television. Did they also connect it to your DVD? In other words, can you see a cable connecting your new set top box to your old DVD player?
Tell me .. Everyone else is completely confused ..
1. What make and model is TV?
2. Where is the INCOMING TV cable connected to? Is it out of a normal wall outlet .. or a box?
3. What make and model is DVD player? I assume it has inbuilt DTV (digital TV)
Are you SURE they have not connected you to a Cable TV service?
I think that if you are confused then i am not sure how to explain any more fully. Don't have or need a set top box. We have a communal aerial system, so aerial cable comes from the exterior of the building, through the living room wall into a newly installed socket, and that aerial cable then connects to the tv. Everything worked fine before they did the upgrade. What doesn't work is being able to record programmes on to the recorder/dvd player.

OK, so, before they did this, you must have had an aerial lead going into the back of your DVD player. Now you don't (or, if you do, it isn't connected to anything at the other end). Is that correct?
OK, but I think we were nearly there ... I was just trying to take it step-by-step.
If you want to give it a final go, pull out the lead going into the back of your TV from the aerial socket, and plug it in instead to the aerial input on your DVD player (so your aerial socket is now connected to you DVD player rather than your TV). Then connect your DVD player (TV out socket) to the TV's aerial input.
See if that works. If it doesn't, undo it all (i.e. re-connect the lead from the aerial socket to the TV's aerial input) and call the council.
