First time going wireless

I know it's going to be a really simple answer but ... This Christmas we've replaced our old desktop computer with a laptop and netbook. The laptop is a PAYG mobile jobby for my son and the netbook is to be used with the old modem (long story) The laptop is working (obviously) but we can't get the netbook online. We have a modem and dongle but I don't know what else I need to do, any advice would be appreciated. As you will have gathered, I need BASIC step by step instructions please. I'm no expert, but don't netbooks come with built-in wireless connectivity? I'm wondering if the dongle is conflicting.

1) as TB says, netbooks come with wireless built in, you don't need a dongle.
2) you say "the old modem" but you need a wireless router, not a modem.

You've also not mentioned anything about the netbook such as what make and model it is, what version of windows it's running (if it's even running windows).

So, ditch the dongle, make sure your "old modem" is in fact wireless capable (if it's not contact your ISP for a wireless router, they'll probably give you one for free) and then if you still can't figure it out after reading the docs that would have come with the netbook post soome more details about it.

It's an MSi u135dx netbook, old modem is supposed to be wireless but is about 3 years old, I'll have to try and dig out the paperwork or ask Talk Talk for a new one. Thanks

thanks everyone. It looks like I need to fire up the old desk top 'puter to sort this out (it's steam powered so I might do that tomorrow)! Thank you all for your help

You shouldn't need to use the desktop computer to configure the router. If the laptop is connecting to it correctly, then it should be able to configure it...
