A current BT tv ad shows a man accidentally dropping his electric razor into a fish tank. The subsequent images imply that the fish get fried as a result. But the razor was not plugged in when he dropped it in the tank, so would this happen in reality?

Electricity travels through water - perhaps it's a battery operated one, or it was carrying a charge and was still switched on when he dropped it in the water?

yes, it is switched on when he drops it in the water. Does that mean the fish would get electrocuted?

No, just tried it and fish were fine, however when I tried it with the lead attached.....

It used to be said that the adverts were the best bit of some programmes, then we got digital multi channel TV so now it's all dross.

No it wouldn't happen in reality the voltage is too low, but it's enough to fool enough folk into believing it might. Plugged into the mains I suspect it probably won't do much either, I think the RCD would cut it out before there was a problem, and in a fish tank I'm unsure how much current would flow through the fish anyway as the tank would be isolated from earth.
