Have a Renault Megane diesel which is intermittently losing power and the heater tip warning light is coming on after having had the heater tips replaced and the car serviced to rectify the problem I am now being advised it may be the solenoid valve. What is the likliehood of this is it easy to replace for a half competent home mechanic - any advise would be great

have a look at the fuel pump, should be on the front of the engine with 4 metal pipes coming from it to the injectors. depending on your imobiliser type it could be very easy or not so easy to change the solenoid valve.

Look for a single wire going to something similar to a temperature sender but bigger on the fuel pump, this should be the solenoid valve, just undo it in normal anti-clockwise directio and lift out , put new one in reverse of above.

The other type will be a black box on the fuel pump which has electrics for the solenoid and as its part of the immobiliser is a bit of a pain to change, if you are not too clued up on it a garage may be the best option, ask around, you'll get it done loads cheaper if you avoid the dealer
