I can remember jumping up and down "like a ferret on a twig" to use my Dad's expression of impatience, waiting for our train. I'd watch for it coming round the curve and into sight, but as soon as it got quite close I'd hide behind my Dad 'cos it was so noisy. We travelled loads on the train between Crewe and North Wales and I LOVED it LOVED it LOVED it. I loved the mesh luggage racks, the lovely pictures in the carriages, and going into the buffet on the station. Of course it was still steam then - not QUITE the same these days.
