And how does this add to the understanding of the elements? Agree with ChuckF, pretty but useless.

I think the site is a kind of developer's playground where someone is sort of showing off their skills. Very skilled too if you search around the site. As to the purpose of this table, I think demonstrating that the knowledge is not necessarily linear is useful in itself and appeals to differences of mental visualisation of information of this type.
It would be even better if you could click on the elements and get to more info.
