Light Bulb Keeps Blowing

When I switch on the light in one particular room it blows (if that's the right word) and makes all the other lights in that part of the house go off. I can resolve this by flicking the trip switch (again not sure if that's what it's called) in the electric cupboard but I have to replace the bulb in the light that originally blew.
This has happened about 5 times in the past month and I have got to the point now where I don't even bother replacing the bulb. It's just constantly off.
What would be the reason for this? Is it something as simple as the light fitting (which I recently changed) or would it be to do with wires and stuff? TIA

If I were you I would take it of again and check the wiring, make sure there are no stray strands of wire that could touch another wire.

Why did you change the light fitting MadMen and has this only been happening since you changed it ?.
Question Author
I changed it because when I put up a new light shade I noticed the white bit (sorry I have no idea what it's called) that the light bulb goes into was wonky. I tried taken it off and straightening it up but something inside had bent which is why it would go on straight. I put a new one on and it seems to be happening more and more now. It did happen before, but not as often.

(At work so sorry if I don't respond quickly) :-)

Thank you. I'll pop home at lunch time and have a look otherwise it'll be dark by the time I get home tonight and impossible! Thanks for your advice :-)
Good luck, and be careful.

I'll be sure to switch off the electric before I do anything!
Go with what Tony has said, Madders. Take the lampholder (the white bit you mentioned) and rewire it. There is possibly a loose strand or two causing a fault.
Arcing possibly, which might explain why you're able to reset the MCB (miniature circuit breaker) until the next time.
Hey Builder, won't be long now until Feb 14th !.
And ?.....
He knows lol.
mrs o ring and crafty.

Thanks. Is that fairly simple to do? It's not dangerous or anything?
Going home in half an hour so I'll try and sort it out then.
Yes it's pretty simple MadMen.

Thanks very much to the both of you. I really appreciate it :-)
Switch the lighting off at the fusebox first. At the wall switch works if someone competent wired it, but not if someone bodged it. Off at the fusebox is safer.
Definitely a short in the wiring
Wiring has a break or is touching (short circuiting)

Are you sure you are using 240v bulbs and not 110v?

Thanks for all the further responses. I've still not been home, so haven't had a chance to look at it. Hopefully it'll still be light when I get home and I can have a look at it then. Thanks again :-)

Oh, and I don't get the comment about Valentines day either MM! lol
You're not buying cheap bulbs from Wilko are you? In my experience they don't last very long at all.
