I think most people just know a few, I only know about 3 and I rarely use them. Just remember that the emoticon is usually made up of the characters that look like the expression in the emoticon.

I am in the same boat as you conne, havent a clue how people remember them all. They all seem to rattle them off just like that. lol

As Ratter says, most people (myself included) tend to use just 2 or 3, they're easy enough to learn by heart.
