Your old message probably won't pop out of the "other" field.
Are they someone who would want you to contact them without being direct friends? If not, they may have changed their settings to reflect this. Facebook recently reminded everyone to change their privacy settings.

When I receive private messages on Facebook I get a little red flag pop up telling me I have messages.
I sometimes see that 'X' is now friends with 'Y' but I do believe that what I see is dependent on their security settings.
