Calgon Tablets

got new Hotpoint washing machine, mrs cuddles put calgon tablets in draw where the detergent goes but half of it keeps staying in the drawer, so question is, is it ok to put calgon tablet straight into the washing machine?

What do the instructions on the pack say?

Mine go in the drawer, sometimes they don't entirely disintegrate. Have you got different compartments in the drawer where the water flows through at different times of the wash?

no pack hopkirk got job lot in plastic bag, I'm presuming its OK to put it in with the washing

I wouldn't put it directly in with the washing, it might crumble up and stick to the fabrics. You might have to try limescale prevention powder instead?

There is bound to be an on-line manual, bernie, if you google the make and model - the on-line manuals are definitely worth checking!

It dissolves eventually so we just drop 'em in when there's none left. We also use a powder which goes quicker and is a lot more economical.

bernie we use Morrisons own brand which is a liquid. Cheaper by far and seems to do the same job.

The point of them is not the washing, but the innards of the washing machine. Putting them in the drum is pointless.

Actually you could do it cheaper still - 1kg of soda crystals on a hot wash (devoid of any laundry) every 6 months. Just depends on how hard your water is. Calgon is just an expensive brand name :)

A washing machine engineer once told me not to buy Calgon, but to put the money saved towards a new machine from time to time.

He said though to occasionally run the machine empty on the hottest wash with a big dose of cheap washing soda.

Forget the Calgon just use a 50/50 mix of washing soda and detergent. same amount as if it was just washing powder on its own. Cheaper and a better wash.
Do the washing soda on it own with a 'boil' wash as well once a month as well.

I live in a very hard water area and have never used Calgon - my last washing machine lasted twenty years.
A couple of years ago the magazine Which submitted a complaint to the Advertising Standards Agency about Calgon claims. As Hopkirk says after 6-8 years of using Calgon you would have spent enough to buy a new washing machine...

Calgon is just a water softener as is a detergent; if you use enough detergent for a hard water area you shouldn't need Calgon..
