Why, when it's windy, does the water in my toilet bowls move? Is there an air vent somewhere?

Have you got an outside privy, lass?
lol ,i read this as when i'm windy ,( must go to specsavers ).
Question Author
Did have once, sweety. Not now though.
Probably caused by wind moving across the vent pipe outside causing a drop in pressure

Question Author
Well the wind's getting in somewhere, mallyh.
Your toilet bowl contains a U bend with water sitting in it. One end is open in the bathroom, the other opens on to your down stack pipe which used to be on the outside of the house but is usually inside nowadays. The down stack is open to the atmosphere for ventilation. When the wind blows across the down stack it changes the pressure in it. This pressure acts on the water in your toilet U bend and causes it to move up and down.
When you say windy, do you mean when you are sat on it ?
Question Author
Thank you, ganges. Didn't really know about the vents. It was just a guess on my part.
That would work as well OG, provided that your bum makes a good seal with the seat.
Question Author
Thank you, too, bhg. Simple explanation there.
what you have is the ancient Japanese condition of "Draftikazzee". It means you have a devine wind in the WC area.
^Was that from 'Carry on Shogun', ttt?
Tilly- i bet you didn't have time to ponder about things like this when you were planning lessons, marking work and preparing for OFSTED visits
Question Author
No, factor, I did not. It's a shame, I know. Perhaps I should get in touch with a supply agency and find myself something constructive to do.
I suggest you try it Tilly and restrict yourself to one day a week and see how it goes. As well as doing day to day teaching cover you may be asked to do some small group/one-to-one intervention work in the run up to GCSEs which is enjoyable without the pressures of a full teacher role
Question Author
I'll give it some thought. Thanks, factor. I need to do something. I'll ring around a few agencies and see what they need. One day a week sounds bearable.
Hope you find something that suits you Tilly.

But while you are on this subject....

Why does my dog find toilet bowl water more palatable than water in her drinking bowl?
ps: How is the "Tilly twister" going?
Question Author
Put the lid down, ozz!

Still using the twister, more for maintenance now rather than inch loss. It does have its limits!
Morning Tilly.

Ozzy: Dogs seem to like drinking anything but 'clean' water. I don't know which one of ours is doing it but they keep drinking the little bit of water that collects in the handles of the sewage drain cover. To be quite honest I don't think I want to know which of the mucky pooches is doing it.
