on most weather reports it gives temperatures but also says things like 'feels like 15C' or something and stuff about wind chill etc - but can anyone explain to me what those numbers actually mean - in terms of going out.

i mean, when its 17 C ... is that chilly? warm? hot? cold? - i haven't a clue what it means in reality

i'd like to know how to understand them, and know the days when i need a summer coat, a warm coat or just a little cardi or top - or nothing at all, etc

thanks

Well now, I don't usually carry my outfit off; however, I'm missing the usual gay old tyme at the bar.
Wear whatever you like stuey (just be circumspect about describing your apparel)
Talking of seasonal colours, I see the shops are stocking up already with maroons, burdundys, and browns.....winter is approaching......:/ x x
Would love to be able to walk to the nearest bar.
On a non-muggy day, I can be there in five minutes; however, if I get mugged, it takes a lot longer.
..makes sense, stuey......;) x
I've just been called to the kitchen to make a tossed salad to go with the mac and cheese for supper. Nice talking to you people...I do hope that joko got some answers to the original question.
Oh yeah,...forgot about that...sorry joko ;) x x

well, other that describing what windchill means - which i already know, and did not ask for - OGs answer made little sense to the question -
" ... you can give them meaning with a calculator. Divide by 5, multiply by 9, add 32 and you have it in English." ... what does that mean?

and telling me only i know how cold i am is sarcastic - not helpful at all.

my question was - how to interpret the numbers - that's all - what temperature do people see and think 'ooh its going to be very warm out today' - etc.

i cannot convert them - because i don't know what those numbers mean either

if i want to know what the weather will be like in 2 days time, or if it says the number will be getting much lower later on in the day - does this mean it is going to get very cold? or just a little bit colder etc etc?

so a thermometer - or looking out the window - doesn't help there ... we are in england remember and the temperature can change hour to hour ... but thanks for trying ...

Despite the weird tangent that went on here, I do think the answer from Tilly on Pg1 just about covers it doesn't it?

"0-10 coat
10-15 jacket
15-20 cardigan
20 upwards, no cardigan "

i think i will also get a thermometer/barometer type thing too as woofgang suggested
Hi, joko, you did mention in your original question "feels like..." I think that the "formula"
"0-10 coat
10-15 jacket
15-20 cardigan
20 upwards, no cardigan " is too simplistic. The wind and/or the humidity can make a substantial difference as to how you, as an individual ,"feel". Clandad has explained the wind-chill factor, and I mentioned the humidity factor. These both affect the way that YOU "feel' the temperature. It's all rather subjective isn't it: all these charts and figures being thrown around don't really mean much. You have to figure out, through trial and error, what clothing in what weather forcasted temperatures and other factors YOU are comfortable wearing.
Still trying to get my head around a string vest with aqua-marine shorts... on a Canadian, Eh?
Well, yes: I think it's quite appropriate after a strenuous day hewing down trees.
So, suey, you cut trees down so you can then cut them up?
I don't have a paucity of "t's" but thought I'd save one for later...
Clanad, I suspect that if we keep "chatting" on here, B00 is going to come walking softy but carrying a big stick, and give us a sharp rap across the knuckles:)
...which is why I'm just lurking.....oh sugar,...I've just broken my cover....:/
Well you too are in for a good rap, and it'll be from B00, not Eminem.
