If you find a death on Ancestry (2004) can you see what the person died of? Do you see a copy of the death certificate?

No.
You get enough information to allow you to order the certificate from the appropriate RO.

Thanks jth. My best friend and I found that her old flatmate who we used to socialise with died in 2004. Naturally, we were wondering what happened as she would have only been 39. I don`t think we would go so far as to order certificates but were just wondering

To watch the current TV ads for Ancestry you would think that you could trace your ancestors back to the year dot and see photographs of them all with just a few clicks of the mouse. Anyone who's researched their Family History will know it's not as easy as that. Far from it.

I've been doing mine for almost 20 years and still have people I can't trace in the 19th century.

Yes, the Ancestry stuff gives you details of the Registry entry of the Death which allows you to apply to the General Register Office (GRO) - assuming you're in the UK - for a paper copy of the Death Certificate. The last time I did it I think the charge was £9.25p.
