This might be a really stupid question but I honestly have no idea. When you download an App onto your mibile, do you have to have both Wi-Fi and Data switched on for the App to work?

Will it work with just Data switched on?

I have downloaded it now. I don't know if it's a Wi-FI dowload or not, Bernie. I just know that it didn't work as I expected it to. It's the Active10 App. I downloaded it, went for a thirty minute walk and nothing was shown on my phone!

Thanks, Bernie, will do.

I did manage to get the App on my phone but before I went out for the walk I switched off the Wi-Fi. I don't like leaving the Wi-Fi on for some reason. When I got back, the walk hadn't been recorded.

The problem is I really don't understand the difference between Wi-Fi and Data. Which one is the most useful?
I only use data when out and about ..at home wi-fi all the time.
Wi-fi is normally faster than data if I need to download anything I use wi-fi ...I don't have a big data allowance per month
Broadly wifi is in the house when you can connect to your hub, or when you are out and can connect to a public wifi hub like free wifi in cafes and so on. Data is when there is no hub to connect to. Data costs money, wifi is covered by your monthly internet payment. If its an activity app, As Bernie says, wifi is usually faster than data.
Talktalk advise their customers to leave the WiFi router switched on all the time, not just when needed. Something about it adjusting itself for most efficient operation I think they said.
The electricity saved by turning it off is absolutely minimal.
Tills don't turn your wifi off. Every time you switch back on it thinks you are a newbie and ekes out performance( non tech explanation guys. For Tills) When you are at home switch off roaming and save data allowance, at home let your phone automatically connect to wifi, and if you can make all updates only allowed on wifi. Safer, cheaper, faster, more secure, and set it to need permission before downloading carp. (anag)
Downloading and installing needs one or the other, not both.

Some apps don't need data from the Net in order to work.
Those that do only needs one source: either mobile data on, or WiFi. Choose whichever is cheaper.
"The problem is I really don't understand the difference between Wi-Fi and Data. Which one is the most useful?"

They both do the same thing.

Data is supplied and charged for by your mobile service provider. They use their mobile network to pass data. You may have a mobile account that gives you unlimited data or one that is limited or charges you for whatever you use.

WiFi is a wireless connection to an Internet router. Either your own or someone else's. Data transfer is supplied by your Internet provider in this case.

Thank you all I understand what it's all about now. However, I cannot get my phone to connect to my home Wi-Fi for some reason but can connect to Wi-Fi with Fon. Is that still safe to leave on all the time?
Question Author
Is Wi-Fi with Fon safe to use, please?
I take it you are with BT Tills. Fon is safe and secure but you should be able to connect to your BT hub which is even more so. Are you entering the code that comes with your hub and should be on the little square info lozenge that is tucked in the top of the hub. You are looking for "Wireless Key" not admin password or wireless wps pin. The sequence of numbers and letters will look like this. bb8d7cdaab. This is the code you need to enter on your mobile before it grants access. You must have given details, probably email and password of your account, to Fon when you first tried to connect.

Thank you, Togo. I have tried that before but I'll give it another go.

Thanks for your patience. :-)

Just tried it again and it tells me that there is an 'authentication problem.'
