Weighing Scales

Is it just me, or is anybody else put out by the lack of weighing scales in the fruit and vegetable areas of some supermarkets.
Sure, stuff is weighed at the checkout, but just for customers to be able to weigh goods themselves, to know weight, and to make price comparisons based on weight.
Would it be so difficult to keep a scales in operation for the customer also.
Today, I asked my supermarket about it, but alas, the manager said he didn't know why there was none for the customer.

Local Sainsburys has 2 one on the veg side and the other on the fruit side, and I moan about that. Sounds like we are lucky.

Waitrose ask you to weigh your produce and fix price tag in the produce department before you go to the checkouts

It annoys me too. I think it's just a sign of the disdain supermarkets have for the customer these days.

Frankly who cares? If you want 2 carrots, 3 potatoes, 4 tomatoes etc Just buy them and who cares what they cost as the price per kilo is displayed on the shelf label so you can make your price comparisons from there.

I do as Diddlydo does, just buy what I need, if price is a factor I look at the price per kilo or whatever.

Diddlydo - what if you're shopping for a recipe and don't want to buy too much or too little?

When did we ever buy a pound of apples, or carrots, or anything else come to that ?

For instance, a pound of apples might be 3, 4, or 5.

So, if you wanted 5 apples, so that you and your partner could have one, and your 3 kids could have one, you bought 5 apples !

Fair point, for the price of an extra spud,tom or apple I'd estimate over - always gets used up. I'm pretty good at gauging weight.

Agree scales are nice and would be helpful, many supermarkets do have them.

I agree with the OP....if you want to buy, say, 350gm of something for a recipe....you need scales - even if price isn't a concern. There are three sets of digital scales in fruit/veg section of my Waitrose and I find them useful.

Fruit, fair enough, but what about a one off ingredient?

There are lots and lots of different veg. Spuds, carrots etc etc can be used up but what if a recipe called for beetroot or fennel or something that wouldn't get used otherwise?

Recipes stating quantities such as 250g carrots etc are not set in stone. Surely anyone has an idea of what 250g of carrots feels like in the had?

If there were no scales and with recipe to hand I'd get one or two beetroot or a pack, so much comes packaged now.

Ditto Fennel though I dislike it.

As I say I have not been in a supermarket with no scales available.

Mikey - When did we ever buy a pound of apples, or carrots, or anything else come to that ? I used to work on a garden nursery in the school holidays in the late 1950s, which involved standing a market stall. Everybody asked for apples/potatoes etc by the pound. The only exception was oranges, which people asked for by number.

Diddly - when I follow a recipe for the first time I follow it exact. Then I make adjustments to suit our tastes.
