Mystery Object ? Please Help Identify

hi all ,
a mystery object . metal + mother of pearl tube ( like a party popper )
can anyone tell me what it is /function etc ?
4" long opens with spring inside to allow pump action .

Spring loaded at one end, what happens at the other end? Presumably the "cap" unscrews?

My guess is it is a tube for storing coins .. sixpences or thrupenny bits !

I am assuming it is not for a child's toy because of the lovely mother of pearl decoration. Tempted to think it is for a female.

sirlearie, is the stopper made of cork or wood and is that dirt or rust on the spring?

I assume the metal part can be pressed down into the larger chamber. If so, does that action itself force off the cap?

It possibly belongs to Gwyneth Paltrow and is used in her perfume production.
